A Transformative Work Experience Week for Harris Academy Tottenham Students

Over the course of the week, ten enthusiastic students from Harris Academy Tottenham immersed themselves in the daily operations at LondonEnergy’s EcoPark site in Edmonton. Throughout their week of work experience, the students were introduced to a wide range of career pathways within the waste management and renewable energy sector — areas many had not previously considered.

From engineering and operations to communications and sustainability initiatives, the students engaged with real-world challenges and witnessed first-hand the pivotal role that LondonEnergy plays in creating a greener future. The experience offered them an invaluable glimpse into the skills, innovation, and teamwork required to drive forward one of the UK's largest waste management operations.

The Role of Mentoring

A cornerstone of the Pathfinder Programme is its strong focus on mentoring. Prior to the placements, LondonEnergy staff members attended an interactive mentor training workshop delivered by Wiseup coach Stephen Chandler. Armed with mentor manuals and best practice techniques, the mentors were well-prepared to guide their mentees through this important early career experience.

Throughout the week, mentors provided continuous support, helping students build confidence, reflect on their learning, and set goals for their future aspirations. Post-placement mentoring sessions are also being held to help students consolidate their experience and translate their newfound skills and knowledge into tangible next steps.

Reflections on the week

The latest work experience week may just be the most impactful yet, after LondonEnergy introduced new workshops and experiences to broaden the students’ horizons. Feedback from both students and mentors has been overwhelmingly positive, with many students expressing how the experience has shaped their career thinking and opened up exciting new possibilities for their futures.

Looking Ahead

The programme is not over yet however, as the mentoring pairs still have their fourth and final mentoring sessions to consider. Taking place as this academic year draws to a close, this session promises to shine a light on the students progress and next steps. Taking into consideration all their experiences on the work placement and their future goals, it’s hoped that the pairs will map out their next important steps in their early careers. This could be university, apprenticeships or running a business, either way, thanks to their mentor’s expert guidance, we’re positive the students will flourish and thrive in whatever they choose to do.
