Wiseup is thrilled to share our recent social value assessment by HACT found that the value of our mentoring, confidence-building and work experience Pathfinder programmes has created £939,692 in indicative social value.

This fantastic achievement is the culmination of 3+ years’ programmes with our dedicated business partners, whose teams' commitment, expertise and time have made this possible.

HACT’s social value findings

Earlier this year, Wiseup sought the independent evaluation of HACT to outline the core metrics of our programmes, which are designed to enhance the confidence, skills and career readiness of the young people involved.

Through the Pathfinder Programme, Wiseup connects young people with trained employee mentors and creates structured opportunities to experience the world of work. Alongside one-to-one mentoring, students take part in workplace experiences that help them explore different career paths, develop their understanding of professional environments and build the confidence and skills needed for their future careers.

As a result of these activities, the HACT assessment identified three key areas of social value that were outcomes from our programmes. The indicative estimates included:

  • £731,012 linked to increased confidence
  • £134,674 linked to mentoring
  • £74,006 linked to gaining advice

The assessment was undertaken by HACT using its wellbeing-based social value approach, aligned with HM Treasury’s Green Book. The methodology uses financial proxy values to estimate the value associated with outcomes such as confidence, mentoring and access to advice.

HACT based its calculations on the available programme data, alternative evidence sources and stated assumptions.

The assessment has provided Wiseup with a useful baseline for understanding the potential value of our programmes, as well as identifying opportunities to strengthen future impact measurement.

The impact of our programmes

Increased confidence was the largest contributor to the overall indicative social value. The assessment also found that around 25% of participants reported a confidence improvement that met the threshold used to evidence social impact when their feedback was mapped against the HACT UK Social Value Bank.

These findings reinforce the importance of helping young people develop not only practical employability skills, but also the confidence to consider different career paths, ask questions and engage with professional environments.

A central part of Wiseup’s approach is creating structured opportunities for young people to engage with the world of work, and whilst this hugely benefits the students, as can be seen by the data, businesses also benefit from taking part.

Employees have opportunities to develop their mentoring and communication skills, share their expertise and contribute to improving access to career opportunities in their communities.
